Good food and comfy boutique rooms less than 2 hours from London in the heart of Suffolk's 'Constable Country'

You couldn't hope for a better Suffolk location than that of The Angel Inn - except perhaps that of its sister pub The Crown just across the road – situated in what is one of the county's most desirable villages. Both pubs are part of the East Anglia Chestnut collection, and both serve good food and offer comfy boutique rooms less than 2 hours from London in the heart of 'Constable Country'. As the group's newest recruit, now might be a good time to give The Angel a go – if it's even close to the standards of The Crown, you definitely won't regret it,

The timbered Angel is more than five hundred years old, and has gone through a few changes over recent years, including a spell as a fine dining gastropub, but it's always been an appealing place both to stay and to eat, with an award-winning restaurant and rooms that were ranked as the best in East Anglia a few years back. As part of the Chestnut group, it's gone back to basics and is a good example of what they do best – a proper village local, serving high quality food, and itoffering a set of very well-appointed and contemporary en-suite rooms. Like its sister inn, it's an ideal place to enjoy a short break in the Suffolk countryside.

The Angel's 11 rooms are all individually designed and named after local Suffolk attractions and themes. You can choose from three categories:  Classic, with king-size beds and small en-suite bathrooms, Superior, with king-size beds and either a walk-in shower or rolltop bath, and the most spacious Deluxe rooms, which have both a rolltop bath in the room and a walk-in shower. Considering their quality, the rooms are all very well priced, and come with WiFi and flatscreen TVs, coffee and tea-making facilities (including Nespresso machines), air-conditioning and underfloor heating in the bathrooms.

As for food, they serve an all-day bar menu – steaks, fish and chips, seafood platters – along with a more varied menu available at lunch and dinner.  You might also be lucky enough to be here for their 'Fishboard Fridays' or their excellent selection of roasts on Sunday. Either way, you couldn't be better placed for the country walks you can do from the village itself, or the delights inof Constable Country, including the pretty village of Dedham just over the border in Essex, Flatford Mill (as depicted in Constable's Hay Wain) and the beautiful river Stour.
