Set in the heart of Constable Country in East Bergholt, The Red Lion reopened in 2025, after becoming part of the Chestnut collection, a group of dog-friendly pubs and restaurants in East Anglia. It's ideally located in the Dedham Vale National Landscape, which straddles Suffolk and Essex, and is home to five individually decorated bedrooms, each in keeping with the character of the pub. You'll find four in the main building and the fifth in the garden.
Each guest room has WiFi, a tea and coffee station, a flat-screen TV and toiletries from Connock England, inspired by the region's verdant countryside. Options include 'Luxury', where you have not just a bedroom but also a cosy sitting area with two single sofa beds; 'Extra Large King' on the first floor, with a big bed plus an en-suite bathroom with walk-in shower and two sinks; and 'Small King', with an original beamed ceiling in the bathroom.
Food-wise, pop in for breakfast and enjoy a fry-up or imaginative dishes such as hot honey and feta crumpet, or grab a drink and a bite at lunchtime, when stone-baked pizzas and pub classics are on the menu. Plates range from half a pint of prawns and their burger with bacon jam and smoked cheese to 'Sharing Ploughman's'. Come Sunday, it's all about roasts and seasonal options.
The Red Lion is an ideal base for exploring Constable Country, be it ancient woodlands or charming villages like historic Stoke-by-Nayland or quaint Dedham, where you can hire a boat and row along the River Stour.Once home to landscape artist John Constable, Dedham is a shortish walk from Flatford Mill, the location of Constable's famous Hay Wain – a picturesque spot that's also just a short five-minute drive from East Bergholt.
