A historic, Cambridgeshire hotel overlooking the River Great Ouse

Brought to you by Chestnut, The Old Bridge is one of their 'Big Houses' – an 18th-century, ivy-clad inn on the banks of the River Great Ouse in Cambridgeshire. Inside the handsome townhouse hotel, you'll find 24 stylish, en-suite bedrooms, ranging from singles and twins up to family, large doubles and four posters. Whichever you choose, the standards are high: super-comfy beds with mattress toppers, wool or silk (hypo-allergenic) duvets, air-conditioning, baths and showers with Noble Isle toiletries, flat-screen Freeview TVs, and WiFi. And of course, this wouldn't be a Chestnut property if it weren't dog-friendly.

The food? The Old Bridge has an excellent reputation, with a smart-but-relaxed restaurant overlooking the garden dishing up simple, tasty dishes like salt cod croquettes with lime mayo and charred lemon; chicken, pistachio and leek terrine with lovage emulsion, pickled courgettes and sourdough toast; and pork tenderloin with honey mustard carrot purée, Spanish tortilla, sprouting broccoli and Maderia sauce – yum! They're open for lunch and dinner every day, and offer a first-rate afternoon tea, too. Alongside the main eatery, there's a bustling lounge, bar and patio serving nibbles, starters, sharing boards and sandwiches. The hotel is also home to the 'Bottle Shop', where you buy wine from their varied selection, or sample a tipple or two from one of the ‘Enomatic’ machines.

If you fancy exploring, The Cromwell Museum is just five miles away, Cambridge is 20, and Ely is 45, where you'll find one of England’s great cathedrals. Meanwhile, Stamford and Burghley Park are just over half an hour by car.
