Glamping on a former farm and working mill with a private lake and stunning views across the Welsh countryside

When it comes to Wales, it's Pembrokeshire that traditionally gets all the plaudits, and there's no doubt it's an enticing part of the country. But the bordering region of Ceredigion just to the north is beginning to get noticed too, and no wonder, with cliff walks, sandy bays, fabulous beaches and fishing villages just waiting to be discovered by the unsuspecting visitor. Indeed Cardigan Bay was recently lauded by Lonely Planet as one of the 'best places to be right now" – not just in Britain but the world (!), and Cardigan itself as one of the most happening towns in Wales.

It's a point of view that Shaun and Jo Davis heartily agree with, having given up city life to buy a small listed farm and set up a beautiful and very peaceful glamping site. Situated close to the sandy expanse of Aberporth Beach, it is by any standards a glorious spot, with stunning views across the countryside, its own private lake and lots of little corners to explore – and the accommodation they have created here is as good as it gets, with Shaun and Jo the best kind of hosts: happy to leave guests to themselves but equally happy to share their passion for the area with others.

There are two wooden cabins and four safari lodges. Each features comfy made-up beds, a fully-equipped kitchen, old-style lanterns and a wood-burning stove, along with a wood-fired hot tub, picnic table, barbecue and firepit. Crucially each has its own facilities too — en-suite for the lodges, which can sleep up to six people, and behind each of the cabins,  which can sleep up to four.

Lastly it would be a pity not talk up the appeal of Sloeberry Farm itself, which you are free to roam around or just sit around and soak up the sun. There's lots of space, and the buttercup-dotted meadows and lines of mature trees seem to have been left to their own devices – for children, the opportunities are endless. You can reach the coast path and spectacular cove of Aberporth beach (3 miles away) by way of a relatively undemanding mix of footpaths and country lanes, and Cardigan town is a short drive away, with its abundance of indy shops and excellent restaurants. The coast here is also famed for any number of  outdoor pursuits, from coasteering, paddle-boarding and sea kayaking to mountain-biking and just plain old walking. It's also one of the best areas in the UK to spot dolphins, seals, puffins and other rare wildlife.

Nearby

Lonely Planet recently voted Cardigan Bay "the best place to be in the world right now" and it certainly fits the bill with it's mix of fantastic beaches and coastal villages, yet still retaining a relatively uncrowded feel, especially out of peak season. Cliff walks on the coastal path, sandy bays and National Trust-owned beaches are the highlights. By car, the town of Cardigan is not far away, formed around a Norman castle which is open to the public and boasts a great café and frequent outdoor events. Nearby Cilgerran Castle (01239 621339) still welcomes visitors – its two massive drum towers dominate the surroundings. North, picture perfect New Quay has a cobbled stone harbour – with plenty of cafés and fantastic chippies, it's a great place to enjoy the views and spot the Cardigan Bay dolphins

Food & Drink

The nearest pub, the Penllwyndu Inn (01239 682533), is an easy mile and a half walk away – don’t be put off by the hangman's noose sign! There are plenty of other places to eat and drink within within easy striking distance. Cardigan the local town (ten mins away) has plenty of choice, plus a supermarket for supplies, whilst Aberporth Bay (five mins) is slightly smaller but has a great fish and chip shop (01239 811003) next door to The Ship Inn (01239 810822), both of which have excellent views of the beach.

Open

March–December.

Family Friendly

Getting back to nature doesn't mean giving up every modern luxury – as Sloeberry Farm shows – but there are some that you'll certainly not need while you're here. Put down the iPads, switch off the Kindle, throw away their phones and let the kids loose.

Pricing

Bell Tents from £75 (2-night minimum), Lodges from £100 (2-night minimum).

The Owner Says

Coastal glamping at Sloeberry Farm, recently awarded Gold Glamping the highest possible by VisitWales as part of the Welsh Government Quality Assured Glamping Scheme.

The farm is located close to Aberporth Beach near Cardigan in West Wales. The farm was founded in the early 1800s making use of the natural spring to power a mill and dairy.  It sits in a sheltered spot with stunning views across the countryside and is a short drive to many local sandy beaches and coves.

Sloeberry Farm Lodges and Cabins all with private facilities are located in 13 acres of pasture & woods, only 3 miles from the fishing village and stunning beaches of Aberporth and a short drive from the historic town of Cardigan.

As we only have four lodges and in a different meadow a couple of cabins , peace, quiet and privacy have always been an integral part of a stay here at Sloeberry Farm.

Fantastic Cabins!

We loved our stay here. Perfectly located close to beaches, the nature reserve and the local town but in a peaceful, rural location. The cabin was bigger than expected and had everything we needed for a lovely, relaxing break - will definitely be back.
