Camping along the footpath to Maenporth Beach, a stunning bay between Falmouth and the Helford Estuary

The closest campsite to Falmouth and its beaches, Tregedna Farm Holidays is tucked just a short walk away from Maenporth Beach (about 50 minutes’ walk along the coast path back to town). Pitches are on a gently sloping field in the lush Maen Valley, or you can bunk up in one of the dorms in the (centrally heated) barn-conversion lodge next door. From its dip within the valley, Tregedna Farm is surrounded by countryside as far as the eye can see and a Hansel and Gretel like trail of sand is left by campers wandering too and fro from the beach. It's a simple life here, a traditional campsite in a good location.

There is a play area with swings and a see-saw, but the main appeal is the masses of space for ball games and running around. In the 12 green pitch-where-you-like acres there’s a refurbished toilet block with male/female loos and a separate stone hut with showers (2 male, 2 female), a large indoor washing-up area, local information, washing machine and tumble dryer.

Suitable For

Groups, campervans, caravans, tents, dogs – yes.

Maenporth Beach is the reason for camping here – a sheltered sliver of pebble and sand perfect for bathing and rockpooling. Don’t forget your wetsuit, as this is a haven for water sports including swimming, snorkelling and kayaking. Arvor Sea Kayaking runs sit-on-top- and sea-kayaking sessions from the beach and along the Helford Estuary. Beach hop around the headland to Swanpool, where Elemental Adventures (01326 318771) holds dinghy sailing, windsurfing and coasteering sessions among its beach activities. Stroll along the coast path and within 45 minutes you can be in the hubbub of Falmouth one way, or on the serene and green banks of the Helford the other way.

Food & Drink

You can get seasonal produce including organic potatoes from the onsite farm shop. For snacks, burgers and ice cream bang on the beach, head to Life’s a Beach at Maenporth or, just behind the beach, the Cove (01326 251136) serves gourmet cuisine made from the best local ingredients. A 20-minute walk around the headland, the Swanpool Beach Café, sells legendary ice creams and simple alfresco fare and, if you want a trendy beach hangout for a cocktail or milkshake, step further towards Falmouth to the Gylly Beach Café on Gyllyngvase Beach (01326 312884).

Campsite open May–October.

Family Friendly

Be aware that the entrance track for cars slices between the play area and the camping field.

Camping - adults £7.50–£8 per person per night, Children £4, electric hook up £3.50. The Lodge from £20 per person per night

Getting There

From Truro, take the A39 to Falmouth, staying on it until you pass Asda, after which turn right at the next roundabout (with the black anchor). Go straight across the next 2 mini roundabouts and continue on this road for about 2 miles, following signs to Maenporth. Tregedna Farm is on the right, about ½ mile before the beach.

Take the train to Penmere on the Truro to Falmouth branch line. The station is about 1½ miles from the campsite. The 500 bus from Falmouth to Helford Passage goes right past the campsite and will stop across the road from the entrance.
