An off-grid countryside glampsite in a beautiful farmland setting

Get right off-grid at this countryside glampsite in a beautiful farmland setting, where peace and quiet and deep, dark skies await. You can pitch a tent or campervan on the rustic six-acre site at 700-year-old Baxby Manor – everyone gets a campfire pit, and there are hot showers, sinks and loos in a modern, spotless, heated facilities block. Three chalet-style wooden eco-pods and some cute hoggit houses take care of the glamping end of the market, but it's all very low-key and eco-friendly – so, no electricity and barbecue or camp-stove cooking only, but candles and lanterns are provided, and the shower-water is heated by a biomass boiler. Peace and quiet is what you're promised and it's what you'll get too – it's definitely not for big groups, party people or late-night revellers, and there's a strict keep-it-down policy between 11pm and 7am.

It's the extras that really make this place – like the alpacas that sometimes come to visit, the farm eggs that you can buy, or the fact that the local butcher calls on request and there's a purpose-built on-site Pizza shack (The Pizza Shack@Baxby Manor) which is open every day during school holidays for breakfasts and homemade stone-baked pizzas. You're a short walk from Husthwaite village (a couple of miles off the A19), where there's a pub and a shop; and nearby attractions include Coxwold (2.5 miles away), Thirsk (9 miles) and Sutton Bank (12 miles), so the location's great for the west side of the North York Moors National Park. Check out also their fabulous self-catering Treehouse, Rufus's Roost, nearby.

No hardstandings and all pitches are grassy and flat. Three Eco-Pods and five Hoggit Houses. You need to bring your own bedding in both. No cooking facilities in the eco-pods, just a bed with mattress, but a camping stove, crockery indoor seating and a log-burner in the Hoggit Houses, there is outside seating and Firepits provided at every Hoggit House, Pod and camping pitch. Firewood £6-50 per bag (or two for £11) or you can bring your own). A heated timber amenity building houses showers and disabled facilities. The entire eco-friendly building includes Heat Recovery ventilation throughout, water and space heating by biomass boiler, LED lighting and minimal lighting around the site for star-gazing purposes. There is a drying room, pot wash, fridges and freezers, shop selling essentials and local food stuffs, plus a book swap for all. Near the entrance in the village there's a large games area with exercise park and children’s play equipment. There's also a child-free quiet area, aptly named 'The Sanctuary’ of five . Chemical toilet disposal for vans.

Suitable For

Tents, glampers, kids, dogs (except in glamping accommodation or The Sanctuary), couples, families – yes.

Stag, hen and noisy parties, large caravans and motorhomes - no, with a strict no noise policy between 10pm and 7am.

It's a 5 minute walk from the campsite into the village of Husthwaite, one of many old settlements around here that appeared in the Domesday Book and still reflect their history in Norman churches and exposed Tudor beamed buildings. Families staying in range of the campsite will find a tennis court here, along with a pleasant pub (Tomahawk Steakhouse). If you're looking to avoid the car there are plenty of great walks and cycle routes that link up the various villages. Elsewhere, though, its 3 miles to Shandy Hall (01347 868465), home of picaresque novelist Laurence Sterne, and a little further to Byland Abbey (01347 868614), formerly one of the greatest early Gothic buildings in northern England, now left in magnificent ruins since the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century. Other top attractions in the vicinity include Duncombe Park (01439 770213) and must-see Rievaulx Abbey (01439 798228) – both within the North York Moors National Park (01439 772700) and approx 5 miles away.

Food & Drink

They have have a purpose-built on-site Pizza shack (The Pizza Shack@Baxby Manor) which is open ever day during school holidays  for breakfasts and homemade stone-baked pizzas.. There's also a local favourite butcher who makes appearances on request – you can hire a tripod and grill onsite for cooking on your own campfire (£5 for the duration of your stay). Pub-wise the Tomahawk Steakhouse at Husthwaite is just down the road, a 5 minute walk away.

Open Easter–end-October.

Pods from £50 (2-night minimum stay at weekends); hobbit houses from £47.50 Sunday to Thursday or £95 holidays and weekends. Tent pitches (2 people) and campervans £22, with electric hook-up £28.

Getting There

The site is quite hard to find and you can't rely on Sat Nav to get here alone. From the North, take the  A1/A19 to Thirsk and follow the signs to York. Continue south on the A19, ignoring the first turn-off at large crossroads and carrying on through the village of Thormanby Turn left after 2 miles (signed Husthwaite, Coxwold, and 12th century church) and Baxby Manor is 2 miles on the left opposite a cemetery, immediately before the village sign of Husthwaite. From the south, follow the A19 north from York for around 15 miles, past Easingwold, and make a right 1 mile past the second Easingwold by-pass roundabout (signed Husthwaite, Coxwold, and 12th century church). Baxby Manor is 2 miles on the left opposite a cemetery and immediately before the village sign of Husthwaite.

Trains to either York or Thirsk and then Stephensons of Easingwold Bus Service to Husthwaite. Check their websites for timetables.
