Calling the Reading Rooms a boutique B&B is perhaps to underplay its charms. Occupying a handsome Georgian townhouse on a green square, just a few minutes’ walk from Margate’s funky Old Town, the beach and the Turner Contemporary, the three guest rooms may be boutique in style but certainly not in size. In fact, they’re huge, each one taking up a floor to themselves, with enormous bathrooms – around twice the size of a standard hotel room – attached.  Each room is a little different, but the decor throughout is artfully and gently distressed, with peeling plaster revealing the historic layers of the building, gently glowing polished dark-wood floors and a soothing palette of soft, muted colours. This is most definitely at the chic end of the shabby chic spectrum, with every last detail perfectly pitched. Room One, in the old reception room, perhaps has the edge, with its floor-to-ceiling sash windows. But that said, Room Three, on the top floor, with its white-painted exposed beams and partial sea views, has something of the feel of a secret eyrie. And Room Two, in the middle, with its huge exposed chimney breast, is lovely, too. They are all stunning – there’s simply no choosing between them.  It’s a peaceful place, where your hosts will provide you with a luxurious breakfast tray each morning and – unless you need them – will otherwise leave you to your own devices. There’s no sitting and chatting with strangers around a communal breakfast table here: this is a grown-up, romantic destination where grown-up romantics can unwind in tranquil luxury. It’s the perfect spot for an indulgent weekend break.

Double rooms £160; two-night minimum stay on weekends, three nights on bank holidays. It's always worth checking weekend availability on the Thursday before, though, as they do release some single weekend nights
