As well you might expect from this budget off-shoot of Rocksalt, Folkestone’s destination restaurant, this modern chippie is more than a cut above. Squeezed into a narrow space on the harbour, it’s a modern-looking, simple place, with huge picture windows, timber walls and blocky, blond-wood furniture. The decor may be bang on trend, but the emphasis, as it should, remains on the delicious, amazingly fresh fish – fried in super-crispy batter, or baked – to eat in or take away. While they do offer some pretty posh choices – bream or skate cheeks with chips, anyone? – with fancy starters including salt-and-pepper squid and daily specials depending on the local catch, the standard cod or haddock are splendid, too, and all the more delicious for being served – even if you eat in – in a simple cardboard box. Why not go the whole hog, and add pickled onions, mushy peas, curry sauce and perhaps a chip butty for good measure? When the food is this good it would be a shame not to.
