Dumfries & Galloway – the bulge lying between the northwestern English city of Carlisle and Glasgow to the north – is an enticing mix of forest and coast, with historic Dumfries and arty Kirkudbright as its stand-out towns and Gretna Green its most famous, the UK 'marriage capital' being the destination for thousands of runaway couples over the centuries. The gorgeous coastline includes the beaches of the Solway Coast but also Scotland's most southerly point at the Mull of Galloway. Inland, Galloway Forest Park  – Britain's largest forest park, rich in ancient woodland – is the perfect place for outdoor activities, wildlife-spotting (red deer especially) and star-gazing. Accommodation is as varied as the scenery, with country B&Bs and country house hotels joined by a growing range of family friendly campsites and glampsites.
