Bonnie Badger

UK Scotland South Scotland Lothian Edinburgh

Uber Scottish chef Tom Kitchin knows what he is doing both on and off the plate. Not content with running his superb eponymous Michelin star restaurant in Edinburgh, he has expanded into TV, his ‘Nature to Plate’ books and a sprinkling of gastro pubs in the city, and now beyond, with this new gastro inn in deepest East Lothian. One of Scotland’s sunniest escapes – and one of its most seriously underrated outside the country – is an ideal setting with its big skies, excellent local produce and escape-the-city vibe. There is golf, walks on the John Muir Way and a slew of coastal villages to explore too.

Tom and his wife Michaela know an opportunity when they see one, so snapped up this faded old property in the trim, well-to-do beachfront village of Gullane. They took time to craft it into what they needed and the result is this foodie getaway, worth leaving the city to dine at, but even more rewarding for a cosy weekend. Your sleep will indeed be cosy with Egyptian cotton linen, Smartdown bedding and Hypnos mattresses. Choose from Deluxe, Superior, Loft bedrooms or the Master Suite. For more space huddle away in one of two exterior cottages, Hazel and Honeysuckle. On the plate Orkney scallop, Jerusalem artichoke and kale sets the tone, before roasted loin of Borders venison, braised shoulder and celeriac fondant.
