Set in 22 acres of West Lothian woodlands and swirling in the ghosts of Mary Queen of Scots, who is said to have once slept here, this 70 bedroom oasis is an ideal stepping stone for Edinburgh and its airport. It is also an excellent hotel in its own right with the sublime Tower Restaurant, the cosy Vaulted Bar and the Vital Health and Wellbeing Club and Spa. The latter boasts a swimming pool with views out on to the woodlands. The main pleasure remains, though, in admiring the 16th-century building and wandering around its grounds. Some bedrooms boast four poster beds too for that extra splash of luxury. Mary Queen of Scots would no doubt have approved.
