On a quiet country road, in the sleepy village of Upton Magna, The Haughmond is a modern coaching inn, owned and run, since 2014, by husband-and-wife team Mel and Martin. Dog- and cycle-friendly, it's a splendid place for good food, atmosphere, surroundings and service, with a restaurant that's a destination in itself, with 3 AA rosettes and a Michelin Plate award. The calming greens, stag-themed artwork and quality furnishings complement the building's original character, and you can relax with your drink on leather sofas and tub chairs in the newly redecorated Basil’s Lounge. Or adjourn to the peaceful garden and enjoy the extensive views out over The Wrekin and surrounding countryside.

There are 7 well-styled, contemporary en-suite rooms (newly redecorated, with high quality, solid modern oak furniture, white linen, and deep pile carpeting that gives the rooms a really luxurious feel. They all have wifi, flatscreen TVs recently remodelled bathrooms; and freshly ground coffee bags and bottled water are pleasurable little touches. The inn also has a self-catering barn conversion for rent, and runs the Village Store & Cafe across the road, serving tea, coffee, cakes, sandwiches, ice cream and more. A perfect base for the best of the Shropshire Hills, Ironbridge Gorge and Shrewsbury.

There are plenty of places to visit within easy reach of The Haughmond. See the deer at Attingham Park (a five-minute drive away), and explore the charming historic town of Shrewsbury (ten minutes away). The Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site makes a lovely day out, and there are the many beautiful sights to be experienced within the Shropshire Hills themselves.

Open all year.

From £120 to £175 a night for a double room, including breakfast. The Barn (3-bedrooms, sleeps 6, self-catering, through Sykes Cottages) from £360 to £1100 for 7 nights.
