Pretty much the first thing you see as you cross Henley bridge is this wisteria-clad, red brick coaching inn, which has been accommodating travellers for centuries. Its spot on the river is unequalled: many of the 39 rooms have Thames views (do check, though) and during the annual regatta, you could watch at least some of the proceedings from your bedroom window. The décor is classic without being particularly exciting – a handful of rooms have four-posters – while downstairs there's a small, pleasant restaurant and bar. It's unlikely to win any style awards, but for location and value it's perfect. Note: the 'Boathouse rooms' are in a single-storey extension on the far side of the car park and do not face the river.
