A beautiful Somerset glamping site with safari tents, a deckhouse and holiday cottage - and your own personal hot tub!

It's fitting that Middle Stone Farm decided to name their three safari lodges in their first field after birds of prey – Buzzard, Hawk and Kestrel. The second field of lodges opened at the beginning of July 2018 and are named Badger, Fox and Stag. Positioned on the edge of Exmoor National Park, this remote patch of rural West Somerset is full of wildlife. Resident housemartins and swallows nest in the barns opposite Catherine and Patrick’s farmhouse, while rare-breed pigs and sheep, goats, chickens and alpacas all lend the farm an unpretentious, back-country atmosphere – a peaceful rural escape that’s ideal for group stays, couple breaks and family holidays.

The safari lodges are at the upper end of the luxury scale, fully kitted out with everything you need. The kitchen has a wood-burning stove to cook on and a small fridge, plus there's an en-suite shower and wash room, and a sun deck with a private hot tub. Each lodge sleeps up to six people (with the exception of Stag, which houses up to eight), with a king bed, a pair of singles and a quirky 'cupboard bed' – a two-person cubbyhole that children (and adults) adore. There's no WiFi but a good 4G signal.

But the accommodation isn't confined to glamping, The Deckhouse is a white-washed pavilion-style cabin in its own corner of the farm, popular with couples and open for stays all year round.  It sleeps up to four in a king-sized bed and separate small bunk room, while the retro feel of the open-plan living space makes a nice contrast to the modern shower room and the smart new wood-burning stove. There is a private wood-burning hot tub near the fire pit and barbecue area outside, and glorious views of open farmland.

There’s also The Stable Cottage next door to the farmhouse, sleeping up to four people. This is furnished with a mix of traditional and contemporary furniture – comfy sofas, colourful rugs and pictures, along with a slate floor and beams in the open-plan living room. It too has a wood-burning stove, along with a modern kitchen, and uncluttered bedrooms with brass bedsteads and colourful quilts. Outside there’s a small raised patio with seating area and barbecue and views around the farm. The cottage has WiFi throughout and heating is provided by the farm’s biomass boiler.

There is a farm shop onsite selling local produce, including artisan beers, interesting breads, fine wines and home-cooked dishes. The emphasis is on low food miles but all the essentials are stocked too. Wood-fired pizzas are in the pipeline, as is a covered communal space; plus the farm is in the process of converting to organic, and the amiable owners hope to do more tours of the site in future.

The Owner Says

Middle Stone Farm is nestled in the gorgeous rolling hills of West Somerset. It’s all about the hot tubs here! All our glamping has private wood-fired hot tubs. We are on the edge of Exmoor National Park, an International Dark Sky reserve – far from light pollution, the dark skies are incredible here!  We have three luxury safari lodges and a cool wooden cabin we call The Deckhouse – all our accommodation is well suited for friends, couples and family stays. We welcome groups and can sleep up to 26 people.

What’s special about our place?

Watching the flames dance in the fire pits whilst toasting marshmallows and sipping a good red wine from our shop!

What’s special about our area?

It's very rural here, we're well off the beaten track. You won't find queues of traffic on the roads when you head out to explore and you'll be overwhelmed by the beauty of the unspoilt hills.

Best local places to eat and drink?

The Notley Arms in Monksilver is great and Scarlett's Garden is lovely for lunch and artisan pizzas on Sundays. The Pebbles Tavern in Watchet is fun in the evening with sea shanties and acoustic music and loads of ciders. Tracebridge has a great Friday pizza night through the summer and a hip atmosphere.

Why stay with us?

We're friendly and welcoming and enjoy sharing our local knowledge with guests.  West Somerset is quite special as its off the tourist track and really unspoilt.  Although remote, we’re easily accessible, only 30 minutes to the M5 at Taunton, or an hour and three-quarters from London by train.

Getting There

From Taunton, take the B3227 to Wiveliscombe, and from there follow the B3188 which will take you through the village of Ford and up the hill to Pitsford Hill and the cricket club. Shortly after Pitsford Hill you will see a lane marked 'Brompton Ralph' on the left; take this and after three field entrances you will see Middle Stone Farm.

A direct train from London Paddington (0845 748 4950) to Taunton (0845 748 4950) takes 1hr 45 minutes if you're on the fast train. The glamping site is still a 30 minute drive from Taunton train station though and there is no public transport to Brompton Ralph.  You need a car to make the most of your visit!

Enjoyable and relaxing stay, would return

Friendly owners, lovely rural location and a beautifully furnished and equipped cottage. Our stay coincided with some of the worst storms and flooding of the Winter but this really didn't detract from our break. The cottage was comfortable, cosy and big enough for us to enjoy a day relaxing indoors with 2 young children...yes relaxing!!! Plenty to do and places to explore in the area. The farm produce was delicious, bacon and eggs amazing and we arrived to a wonderful home baked loaf and the most exquisite chocolate brownies. The kids enjoyed wandering after the chickens in the farmyard in between rainstorms. The only downside was that we didn't get to enjoy the hot tub as much as we would have liked due to the storms. Would absolutely recommend a stay here and we plan to come back.

Thank you very much Liz and Mike for your kind review,  we're very pleased you had a happy stay despite the winter storm.  Do come and stay again, maybe try a safari lodge in the summer, they all have private hot tubs too.  Best wishes Catherine, Middle Stone Farm
