Georgian elegance in 18th-century Cockermouth, the large, light B&B rooms at Six Castlegate are very much in keeping with the general air of the town, and are approached up a handsome curving Georgian oak stairway. Everything is extremely spick and span, including gleaming bathrooms. Blencathra is probably the best room, with hill views from its two windows, while in a couple of smaller rooms you’ll save yourself a tenner a night. If you’re on your own, ask for the nice and cosy ‘Butler’s Pantry’ on the ground floor.
