The Bridge Inn at Ratho – Edinburgh

An eight-mile meander from Edinburgh Quay complex, you can follow the Union Canal all the way to the Bridge Inn at Ratho. The route is flat with a range of easy terrains – perfect for a gentle but lengthy walk. Perhaps picnic along the way, before settling at the Bridge Inn for a pub dinner and a good night's rest. It makes a peaceful waterside walk with stunning surroundings, or a gentle bike ride too. The pub itself is cosy and comfortable, with waterside views and excellent local food.

The Carpenters Arms – Cambridgeshire

Just on the doorstep, you have the delights of the village of Great Wilbraham to potter around, and the common – ideal for an afternoon's stroll. A little further afield, just a short drive away, you can spend a day walking at Wandlebury Country Park and enjoy nature's winding paths, or else head to Angelsey Abbey, with its 98 acres of gardens and grounds. This 16th-century pub in Herefordshire was awarded 'Best Restaurant with Rooms England 2023-2024' by the AA and boasts a fantastic location, with the scenic Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty close by. Head there for a range of walking, including King Arthur's Cave and Symonds Yat circular trails. Back at The New Inn, relax with a glass of wine (they serve over 50 by the glass) or a local gin and enjoy a three AA Rosette meal.
