The Slate Shed B&B
The folks behind the glamping and camping and cottages at Graig Wen also run a lovely boutique B&B, housed in what was once a Victorian slate-cutting mill. There are five (dog-friendly) rooms, decorated in a bright, contemporary style and equipped with flatscreen TVs, free wifi, posh toiletries, lovely Welsh wool blankets and bath robes. They welcome you with chocolates and a drink, and you can soak up the fabulous views over the Mawddach estuary during your stay (rooms Bran or Miri Mawr have the best views). Breakfasts are yummy, too, with everything sourced from local farms or friends and family – and a breakfast hamper delivered to you if you're feeling lazy. Meanwhile, everyone is welcome to enjoy the spacious communal Caban area with stunning views, honesty bar, books, maps and games.

The Owner Says
The Slate Shed B & B at Graig Wen provides pet friendly, bike friendly and accessible accommodation in an exceptional location in Snowdonia National Park near Dolgellau and Barmouth. Part of a converted Victorian slate cutting mill, our B & B directly overlooks the beautiful Mawddach Estuary, serving up breathtaking views and big breakfasts in style. Wake up to stunning views of Snowdonia's Mawddach Estuary and mountains.
You can walk directly down to the water’s edge and Mawddach Trail (please be aware our track is fairly steep!). The flat cycle trail and foot path between Barmouth and Dolgellau is one of the most scenic stretches of the Wales coast- you may have seen it on BBC's Julia Bradbury Railway Walks programme. Bring your bike or hire one locally to explore the Mawddach Trail and pedal to the pub! We are licensed and serve local craft ales and nice wines.
We are proud to have been recommended in national media including Country Living, The Guardian, Telegraph and The Independent
Built in 1868 with thick stone walls and massive timber beams, the building was used by quarrymen to split rock into Wales' famous roof slates. The building is full of character and has been refurbished with a mix of custom made furniture, modern design classics, traditional Welsh materials and contemporary en suite facilities. But it's the views over the Mawddach Estuary and mountains that steal the show: watch the tide come in over breakfast, see the sun set over a drink on the terrace.
Our favourite roomMiri Mawr is a colourful and snug room which overlooks the Mawddach Estuary. An ancient oak tree outside the window is home to owls and woodpeckers.
The local area
You'll find beaches 5 minutes away and Coed y Brenin mountain biking centre within 15 minutes. With Cadair Idris mountain range on the doorstep and horse-riding on the beach nearby, The Slate Shed bed and breakfast in Snowdonia National Park is a tranquil and beautiful base for activities. The zip wires and Bounce Below at Blaenau Ffestiniog are just 30 minutes away.
Best local places to eat and drink
You have a wide choice for eating out within 5 - 10 minutes drive every day of the week. There are excellent local restaurants, pubs, bistros and cafes including four restaurants featured in the Michelin Good Food Guide. We are very happy to help you with advice and advance booking, which is strongly recommended for both tables and taxis at weekends and busy times. Whether you fancy Welsh lamb, fish and chips by the beach, or good pub grub with a screen to watch the rugby, we'll help you find it here!
You can walk, or even better, bike to a couple of local pubs. It's an hour and 15 minutes walk along the beautiful Mawddach Estuary Trail, or 25 minutes by bike on cycle path all the way to the recently refurbished George III at Penmaenpool. Or you can take the Mawddach Trail over one of the most iconic and scenic bridges in the country to the pubs and cafes of Barmouth. You can borrow a bike from us.
Some of our favourite local restuarants include: Bwyty Mawddach , The Salt Marsh KitchenIndiana Cuisine, Tafarn y Gader Tapas Bar, Dylanwad and Bistro Bermo. And it's always hard to resist having second helpings of Meg's amazing cakes at TH Roberts cafe in Dolgellau!
Why stay with us?

Five en-suite rooms, including one accessible ground-floor room with accessible wet room.
B&B rooms £90–£130 a night. They take children over the age of 10 but all the rooms are either doubles or twins, so the self-catering cottages are best for families.
Closed for B&B Nov–Jan.
Ignore Sat Nav if using the postcode as it takes you a couple of miles too far to Morfa Mawddach railway station. Instead, turn off A470 Dolgellau bypass, and take A493 signposted Tywyn/Fairbourne. Approximately five miles from Dolgellau and one mile before Arthog village, look out for the second road traffic sign with the horse symbol on the left hand side, followed by a solitary post-box on the right. Continue for approximately 300 metres along a narrow stretch of road and look out for the Graig Wen entrance/sign on the right hand side on the brow of a slight hill.
