The Elm Tree
With every justification, the Elm Tree bills itself as a luxury Bed & Breakfast, its handful of rooms shoehorned into an immaculately maintained rustic cottage. Dogs are more than welcome and can hunker down in all four guest rooms, which come complete with capacious beds, 400-thread cotton sheets, cotton robes and top-of-the-range toiletries. The smartest – and most expensive – bedroom offers a pleasant view over the garden from its floor to ceiling windows and an enticing 4-poster bed. A second room is charmingly decorated in shades of light brown and cream with an iron bedstead as a vintage hint. There is good wifi (unusual in sparsely populated Lincolnshire) and each room has a Tassimo Pod system for making hot drinks. The B&B is located beside a leafy B-road on the edge of the village of Spilsby, a modest sort of place that nevertheless makes a good starting-point for explorations of the rolling hills and gentle valleys of the Lincolnshire Wolds, dotted with ancient villages, the prettiest of which is Louth. Within easy reach, too, is the east coast, best-known, perhaps, for its vast army of caravans and modern chalets, but with untouched and unblemished stretches of dog friendly golden sand that stretch away into the distance when the tide ebbs out.
