This Hampshire pub is as stylish and historic a place for a short break from London as you could wish for.

Less than an hour southwest of London, The Red Lion is as stylish and as historic pub as you could wish for. Dating back to the 17th-century, it has recently – and very sensitively – been refurbished and not only serves great food but also has seven stunning stylish bedroom to entice you you stay overnight. And why woudn't you?  The pub is to easy to reach from London, bang on the high street in the very pretty, historic small town of Odiham, plus you're close to some of Hampshire choicest attractions, from family friendly venues like Birdworld and Go Ape to cultural magnets like Jane Austen's house in nearby Alton.

The Red Lion may be a comfortable place to stay and to eat but the pub retains its essential rustic pubbiness and historic character, with a series of beamed rooms, ancient fireplaces and creaky floors that have been complemented by a stylish makeover in both the public rooms and the bedrooms upstairs. Part of the local 'Red Mist' group, it's a nice place just for a drink, but it would be a shame not to try the food, which is consciously local, seasonal and beautifully presented, with a upscale pub food menu that encompasses everything from Hampshire lamb to local chalk stream trout, along with excellent homemade burgers and other pub classics (they also have a good choice of gluten-free options). They also offer sharing platters, a wonderful selection of English cheeses and a good choice of ales from the nearby Hog's Back Brewery as well as Red Mist ale from their own Tilbury microbrewery.

As for the rooms, they are cool, calm and very stylish, with a palette of browns, creams, greys and heritage greens, lots of beams, smartly decorated bathrooms with spacious showers, toiletries, good wifi, flatscreen TVs, tea- and coffee-making facilities in the rooms themselves. Breakfast is included in rates and is a generous continental buffet during the week, with hot dishes available at weekends.

Getting There

The Red Lion sits just 2 miles from the M3 (junction 5). When you come in off the junction, follow directions onto A287 sign-posted for Fleet/Odiham/Farnham. At the first roundabout, you will take the second exit straight ahead. Get into the right-hand lane as you come towards the second roundabout. At this roundabout take the third exit (right) into the village of Odiham. Follow this road into the high street. The Red Lion sits approximately half way into the high street on your right-hand side and sits next door to Bel & The Dragon. There is street parking outside the pub, but if no spaces, continue past the traffic lights (and the pub) and take the first turning on the right into Deer Park Road, and park in the Deer Park car park. This is a pay-and-display public car par. From here, walk towards the small residential mews of houses (very pretty) on your left hand side (if looking back at the way you drove in). Walk through the alley of pretty houses and you will see the side entrance to The Red Lion. If you enter via here and into the pub, a member of staff will be pleased to assist you.
For those not travelling via car, the closest train station to The Red Lion is Hook, which is approximately 2 miles away. Alternatively, you may want to come off at the busier, more frequent stopping station of Fleet train station, which is just a mile further. Taxis are usually waiting, however we highly recommend you pre-book a taxi to meet you off your train. Recommended companies include VGT, Star and Footprint Taxis.  Both Hook and Fleet sit on the busy London Waterloo line.
