Less than an hour south-west of London and just off the M3 near Hook and Basingstoke, The Red Lion in Odiham is a stylish yet historic pub with a buzzy vibe, impressive accommodation and a menu to match. Dating back to the 17th century, owners New Dawn Pubs serves cracking locally-sourced food and drinks to both overnight guests and locals, and also has seven beautiful boutique double (or twin) bedrooms to entice you for an overnight stay.

Upstairs, elegantly understated decor blends seamlessly with Tudor beams and a rustic charm that reveals its coaching inn heritage. Dogs are welcome in all rooms, and receive bowls, a cushion and gluten-free treats baked locally. Spacious rainfall showers, gorgeous ESPA toiletries, reliable WiFi, Smart TVs, tea trays and coffee machines come as standard. Extra little touches like black-out blinds, earplugs and retro Roberts radios are testament to the thoughtful consideration of your hosts.

Hungry guests need not venture far for vittles. The bar-come-restaurant downstairs boasts excellent service and an eclectic menu that's consciously local, seasonal and beautifully presented. Pub grub classics like fish and chips, homemade burgers and a pie-of-the-day all feature, alongside a good choice of specials – succulent chicken supreme, a tasty Barnsley chop – and a good array of gluten-free options and crowd-pleasing desserts like sticky toffee pudding. Drinks-wise, beers on draught include Hogs Back and Tilford brewed just down the road in Farnham, while a well-curated wine list includes Hampshire sparkling varieties alongside local gins from the artisan Gorilla distillery in nearby Upton Grey and the Wessex and Silent Pool distilleries in neighbouring Surrey.

Beyond the cosy confines of The Red Lion, there’s a wealth of exploring to be done. Odiham’s vibrant high street is peppered with quaint chocolate-box buildings and indy retailers, and the town itself is brimming with history. Its ruined castle, accessed via a pleasant stroll along the Basingstoke canal, was once home to King John, who set off from here en route to seal the Magna Carta at Runnymede in 1215. Other nearby attractions include Jane Austen's house in nearby Alton or the gardens at Basing House. There are several of the aforementioned award-winning vineyards and distilleries to tour – Hattingley Valley and Bombay Sapphire to name a couple.

Facilities

Located above a popular high street 17th-century pub, each of our 7 en-suite bedrooms features beautiful, luxurious furnishings for a comforting, and relaxing home-away-from-home experience. Included within each of the rooms you will find features including a rain shower, quality bed linen, bathrobes, ESPA toiletries, and a Roberts radio ensuring you can switch off and immerse yourself into living life and making new memories as you explore the quintessentially English villages of Odiham and its surrounds. Whilst the pub does not have its own car park, high street parking sits directly outside, and a public car park is located behind the pub (Deer Park View Car Park) ensuring easy parking. All bedrooms are classified as standard rooms, however, room sizes and ceiling heights will vary depending on whether you are situated on the first, or second floor. Twin rooms, dog-friendly rooms, and interconnecting rooms are available, so should you have special requirements or requests, please do get in touch and we can allocate you the most suitable room. We can also offer exclusive hire of all 7 bedrooms, which is ideal for groups of friends, or families coming together to celebrate a milestone, or for attending a special event. For more information, please do get in touch with us.

Suitable For

Everyone is most welcome at The Red Lion, including young children and your four-legged family members (a £15 supplement applies for the latter). Being a 17th-century and grade-listed building, the building sadly doesn't lend itself to having the most up-to-date accessible facilities. Should guests find it difficult to climb stairs, we may not be a suitable choice for staying overnight as we do not offer lift/ elevator facilities.  We do ask that dogs must be aged at least 12 months and that dogs are not left in the room alone. They are welcome to dine with you in the restaurant.

Nearby

Historic Odiham sits proudly in the North-East corner of Hampshire, with Odiham's RAF-base nearby. The high street sits directly outside our door and features a myriad of independent shops, and dining, including The Frame Art Gallery, Libelula Boutique, and Allsorts Antiques to name just a few. For those who enjoy history, take a walk around and you will come across The Pest House, The Stocks in the Bury, King John's Hunting Lodge (now a private residence), The Cross Barn, The Odiham Embroidery (housed in The Bridewell), All Saints Church, and Odiham Castle. We are also just minutes from the Basingstoke Canal, where you can hire a variety of water-based activities including paddle boards, kayaks, and river boats.

Food & Drink

There are plenty of delicious eats in and around Odiham. Whilst we are indeed biased by our own delicious creations here on the high street, we are big fans also of the La Crêperie bistro, Fountains café, and El Costello's traditional Italian. If you're looking for something a bit more special, we would recommend Four Seasons Hotel's wonderful bar and restaurant Wild Carrot, which is a 5-8 minute drive away.

Open all year.

Pricing

Double rooms start at £90 a night, including breakfast (continental during the week, cooked breakfasts available at weekends).

The Owner Says

Part of local, independent pub company New Dawn Pubs, The Red Lion, which dates back to the 17th century, sits elegantly in the heart of Odiham's historic market town on the high street. The independent pub & inn enjoys 7 beautiful bedrooms, located upstairs, above the pub, ideal for a weekend away. When you spend time here with us, you will certainly leave feeling refreshed and well-fed; especially if you are a lover of unfussy gastro food, and enjoy an interesting selection of delicious local, and international drinks. Plus, Odiham is a perfect location for those seeking historic sites, countryside walks, boating, and shopping. Located so close to major networks including the M3, A3, and the M4 with nearby train stations (which sit on the London Waterloo line), you're never far from something amazing. Odiham itself is the most beautiful, quaint town, that still features its original stocks, located in The Bury square, it is proudly known for being home to the RAF, and benefits from the Basingstoke Canal that runs through, should you fancy venturing out onto the waterways in the summer months.  Being immersed in the North-East corner of Hampshire, and enjoying close borders to Surrey, there are plentiful choices for those who love the arts, sourcing antiques, and being entertained at theatres, to visiting cellar-doors for tastings and discovering new delicious finds in farmshops, vineyards and breweries.
