Farm stays in safari-style tents on the edge of the New Forest National Park

Stonehenge, Bournemouth beach or the New Forest National Park? There are so many great places close to Midgham Farm that deciding which to visit on a day out during a holiday here can be a bit of a dilemma. And, while you ponder the options, your kids (if you’ve brought them) will be equally engaged in wondering whether to dig in the sandpit, feed the lambs or build a den in the woods.

Midgham is a Feather Down farm; part of a network of farm stays offering off-grid holidays in roomy safari tents (or ‘tented cottages’ as the Feather Down team likes to call them). Lit only by candles and oil lamps, the rustic but homely accommodation is provided by Feather Down and invariably lovely with log burners, en suite loos and cute kids’ cupboard bedrooms as particular highlights. And while the well-set up accommodation varies little, the on-site experience is as unique as the farms you’ll find it on with hosting left in the capable hands of Feather Down’s partner farmers.

At Midgham, that’s the Sykes family. They’ll welcome you to the farm, point out the farmhouse showers, honesty shop and animals then show you to your tent. It’s one of eight which are tucked among trees of the farm’s woodland, along with the site’s two log cabins. There are rope swings, sand pits and four campfire pits too for good old fashioned fun. The woodland attracts plenty of wildlife from roe deer to cuckoos, woodpeckers and owls while farm animals include ponies, pygmy goats, pigs, ducks, chickens and lambs in springtime. There’s also the chance to go fishing, paddling or wild swimming on a private stretch of the River Avon, just along the road.

Situated close to Fordingbridge, on the western edge of the New Forest National Park, there’s plenty to do among the trees. Midgham Farm is particularly handy for the New Forest Water Park with paddleboarding, kayaking, wakeboarding and an inflatable aquapark assault course. Stonehenge is just over 20 miles and a 40-minute drive from site with the beaches at Bournemouth even closer. Whether you stay on site or explore off it, one thing is almost guaranteed; you won’t run out of things to do on a holiday at Midgham Farm.

There is running cold water to both the hand basin and the kitchen sink. Bedding and towels are supplied. Outside each tent there is a sheltered veranda with two deck chairs, a picnic table and outdoor cooking area with a barbecue. Showers are shared and a short walk away. The site also has a pizza oven and a shared undercover seating area, and communal campfire pits. There are rope swings, sandpits and play equipment and an on-site honesty shop.
