First up is The Painswick, a grand Palladian house in the village by the same name – a home-from-home hotel in the rolling countryside. For a self-catering stay, opt for the characterful three-bedroom cottage next door – and if you don't fancy cooking, pop to the hotel for breakfast, lunch, dinner or afternoon tea. For a break in a different part of The Cotswolds, make your way to Calcot & Spa near Tetbury, where you can indulge in a treatment or two, take a dip in the pools (indoor and outdoor), and explore the Grain Store, a fitness and well-being retreat. Directly north five hours or so is Lord Crewe Arms, a cosy dog-friendly spot on the Durham/Northumberland border in the picturesque village of Blanchland. After feasting in the restaurant, head upstairs to one of the country-chic bedrooms to drift off into a peaceful slumber.
