  • Quirky & Unique
Quirky self-catering accommodation on a nature-filled organic estate just a 15-minute drive from Stonehenge

Discovering Kingsettle Stud is like catching the sunrise at Stonehenge. It’s special, and you feel lucky to have found it – an organic 2,500-acre Cholderton Estate in Hampshire (a short drive from Stonehenge, as it happens) where nature rules and the effects are magical. What's more, there is a self-catering cottage, a shepherds hut and a cabin from which to enjoy it!

Cholderton is a working estate, grazed by 1,000 cattle and 100 horses, but's carefully managed and has been organically farmed for 30 years so is also abuzz with birds, bees and butterflies. There's a Victorian walled kitchen garden and maze and the landscape is an extension of the Salisbury Plain, with ancient earthworks, age-old footpaths and Roman roads. For accommodation, you can choose between a shepherd’s hut and a cabin and a quirky self-catering cottage, The Coach House, converted from the groom’s quarters next door to the stables. This comfortably sleeps 4 people in two bedrooms (one double, one twin) and is very cosy, with bare floorboards, rugs and a kitchen-sitting room with an electric log burner. It's very secluded, dog-friendly, and has a large garden and barbecue area. The huts are similar self-contained, with simple cooking facilities and en suite bathrooms and their own outside spaces with room for a campfire.

The beauty of the estate – the farm animals, the gardens, the grounds and the  proximity to Stonehenge – make Kingsettle Stud a great choice for couples and young families, whether as a bucolic stopover on the way to Cornwall or as a destination in its own right. Arrive here and slow down to the pace of Kingsettle Stud life – you'll be glad you didn't drive any further.

We are family owned and run. We love meeting and chatting to guests that come to stay with us, whilst also allowing you complete space and privacy. We will always make an effort to make personal recommendations and go the extra-mile to ensure that you have a comfortable and memorable stay. Having started out 7 years ago with just The Coach House, we are proud that guests return year after year, and many we now count as friends. We provide a complimentary welcome hamper to all guests at check-in (milk, homemade sourdough, farm eggs etc) and a local information pack with suggested itineraries, recommendations and activities. We do run events and workshops here and there, so it's worth looking at our website or instagram if you'd like to join in!

Suitable For

Our site is particularly popular with young families and couples; although anyone keen on nature and particularly bird-watching will love the experience of staying on the Estate. The Coach House is dog-friendly and always popular for this reason. Lapwing Shepherd's Hut is a more luxurious experience perfectly suited to couples. The Bustard Cabin with it's secluded deck and bunk beds is a brilliant option for young families.

The history of the area is hard to beat. Stonehenge is just around the corner, and a walk around our grounds alone will take you past 5000 year-old earthworks and burial mounds. Just last year a hoard of bronze-age axe-heads was found in one of our fields. In the wider area there are some world-class hikes to be discovered, taking in the famous white-horses of the Ridgeway, Avebury and Wansdyke to the north, or the New-Forest with it's wild ponies to the south. Finally, our area has some award-winning eateries and vine yards to be explored, particularly in Winchester and the villages surrounding the river Test (also great for a spot of wild-swimming!).

Food & Drink

The Malet Arms is a beautiful 40 minute walk away through the Estate (or 5 minute drive). It's a traditional Pub with a roaring fire, kitchen garden and locally sourced menu, and we always recommend it. It is also dog and family friendly. Slightly further afield there are numerous award-winning eateries, too many to mention, but foodies will enjoy a visit to the Red Lion in East Chisenbury or The Greyhound on the Test. Stockbridge is also a great option for delis, coffee and light lunches.

The Owner Says

Kingsettle stud is a 2500 acre family-owned organic Estate, and just a 10-minute drive from Stonehenge, a UNESCO world-heritage site in Wiltshire. Each of our accommodation options; The Coach House, The Lapwing Shepherd's Hut or The Bustard Cabin is characterful and unique, and offers the chance to connect with nature and the ancient landscape of Stonehenge. The self-catered cottage and cabins each have a private en-suite kitchen and bathroom, fire-pit/barbeque area and access to shared laundry facilities. Aside from all that the wider area has to offer, Kingsettle Stud has extensive grounds and gardens, biking trails, a farm shop and beautiful pub walks right on the doorstep. As an organic Estate, in the process of re-wilding, we are also lucky to host a huge diversity of wildlife; all making us a destination in our own right.

Getting There

About 8 miles east of Stonehenge, leave the A303 on the A338  towards Cholderton. After a couple of miles, at the first roundabout, take the first exit onto Grateley Road and then continue on Cholderton Road. From here, follow signs to turn left into Kingsettle Stud and the Cholderton Estate. There’s a train station at Grateley (seven miles from Kingsettle Stud), which is ideal for anyone bringing a bike. Otherwise, the best station to use is Andover (14 miles away), which has a taxi rank.
