The Best Places to Stay in the UK

Places to stay

The quality of the accommodation in Britain’s seaside resorts has improved enormously over the last decade or so – and Dorset is no exception, with lots of good, contemporary places to stay. Even the more traditional resorts like Weymouth now have at least one boutique-style B&B, and the vast majority of the region’s guesthouses have upped their game: gone are the swirly carpet and fusty-smelling, chintz decor, to be replaced with good quality beds and linen, modern, well-lit rooms and decent breakfasts. One of the forerunners of boutique-style accommodation in the region is in Bridport, where a fairly average market town coaching pub was transformed into a bright, buzzy hotel with designer decor, top-quality toiletries and a great restaurant. Self-catering too has come on in leaps and bounds, with renovated farm cottages in attractive countryside, or grand country houses, where staying in a simple cottage gives you access to acres of grounds and landscaped gardens to roam in. There’s also one of Britain’s top country house hotels – unashamed luxury and all the pampering you could desire – in the unfeasibly pretty village of Evershot. However, the best way to really appreciate West Dorset’s rural and coastal attractions is by camping: from simple eco-friendly campsites with fantastic sea views to luxury glamping on a working farm with all comforts included, West Dorset has it all.
