The Best Places to Stay in the UK

A picturesque harbour town on the south coast of Cornwall, Fowey sits on the west bank of the Fowey estuary amid some of the UK’s most captivating countryside. It’s a worthwhile destination in its own right, and you can wander the narrow winding streets of the old town, browse the many individual galleries and shops, enjoy some of the finest fresh seafood and take a trip upriver by boat. But there are also plenty of things to do and see in the surrounding area. The pretty village of Polruan is a ferry-ride across the estuary, and the Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan, are only a short drive away – not to mention some fantastic beaches.

Fowey has a long maritime history, dating as far back as the Middle Ages. The port was frequently used by sailing ships involved in confrontations with the French and Spanish; both Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh sailed from here and the remains of the blockhouses built to defend the estuary from invasion can still be seen on the Fowey and Polruan headlands. It was also an important trading port and still exports much of Cornwall’s china clay. It’s now a popular yachting destination too, but it remains a working harbour and its seafaring history is evident throughout the town. There are literary connections too: the author Daphne du Maurier lived here for many years and the area provided the inspiration for many of her novels.

A great little town, and close to the best that south Cornwall has to offer.
