The Best Places to Stay in the UK

Places to stay

There's a great range of places to stay in North Yorkshire, from cheap and cheerful B&Bs to grand country-house hotels, and you shouldn't have too much trouble finding something, whether you're looking for a bargain weekend away or a lavish, romantic treat. In the North York Moors, Pickering and Helmsley are the main two towns for accommodation, while the seaside resorts of Whitby and Scarborough have a very wide range of places to stay.  If you're after a base for the Dales, you need to choose carefully, since apart from Wensleydale and Swaledale the Dales tend to run north–south, meaning it can be quite a roundabout drive to get from one side of the Yorkshire Dales to another. Skipton or anywhere along the A65 is useful for seeing the southern Dales, Ingleton is handy for the western Dales, while Richmond is main town base for the northern Dales. It's not all farmhouse B&Bs and traditional guesthouses either, though these do form a large part of what's on offer – there's been a real shift towards quality, and some of the region's best boutique hotels, contemporary country inns, pubs with rooms and classy B&Bs stand comparison with the best in the rest of the UK. Outdoorsy folk have a great choice of a hostels and campsites, especially in and around Dales hotspots like Malham, Swaledale and Nidderdale. And of course there is a fabulous range of holiday cottages to choose from if you're self-catering.
