The atmospheric White Horse & Griffin hotel in the heart of Whitby's old town area also has a charming bistro-style restaurant, serving everything from local lamb to fish landed at the town harbour. The look is rustic-chic – exposed walls, deep colours and crisp linen – while the menu adds Mediterranean and Asian twists to seasonal English dishes. You can expect mussels, fish pie, slow-roast belly pork and the like, while a massive seafood meze platter comes designed for two to share. There's a good choice for veggies too, though the house special is a serious ‘carpetbagger’ fillet steak stuffed with a king scallop or native oyster.
