You want fish fresh off the boat? You definitely want Sandgate Seafoods then. There's always a scrum around the shop window (though that has a lot to do with the huge displayed shark jaws), and the choice is second to none in Whitby. The guys inside really know their stuff too, so don't be afraid to ask if you don't know how to cook or prepare something. The selection depends on the catch from the local boats, and it's great for crab, lobster, haddock, plaice, sole, mackerel and monkfish – but keep an eye out for fresh shellfish and more unusual things like John Dory, conger eel and beach-gathered samphire. They also do a nice line in takeaway portions of cooked prawns, cockles, mussels and all the other seaside classics.
