Helmsley's community arts centre has a great year-round programme of events, showcasing everything from piano recitals to stand-up comedy. There's a 140-seat auditorium, plus 40-seater studio/exhibition space, which makes for intimate surroundings for events as diverse as live National Theatre screenings direct from the London stage or street- or Indian-dance workshops. It's a terrific asset for a small town like Helmsley, and also boasts its own in-house amateur theatre company (the 1812 Theatre Company – named after the date of the building, which was originally the old Quakers' Meeting House).
