Church Lane Whitby

You have to work for the best views in town, by taking the gut-busting clamber up the 199 Steps that run from the end of Church Street up to St Mary's Church and Whitby Abbey. Pallbearers used to have to carry coffins up here – be thankful all you have to do is keep a count of the steps. The panorama of town, harbour and sea is magnificent, with the red roofs and white houses of Whitby virtually under foot.
