Fancy a boutique guesthouse stay in one of Bath's elegant Georgian terraces? That would be Dukes, a bijou little place with just 17 rooms, located on the rather grand Great Pulteney Street. Like many of Bath's townhouse accommodations, the rooms make full use of the building's layout and style, meaning a varied choice of quarters, from snug doubles up on the top floor (stairs only) to elegant suites with a separate sitting room, or even two theatrical four-poster rooms, perfect for a romantic treat.
Decor and features throughout have a period feel – big drapes, antique furniture, writing desks, sash windows, old pictures – but bathrooms, TVs, and other facilities are all very much up to date. Outlooks vary quite a bit, so a bit of due diligence is required if you want more than just a rooftop and chimney-pot view – some rooms do look out over Great Pulteney Street while others have distant views of the surrounding countryside. Breakfast is a high point, judged as one of the best in Bath, and if you come back late at night, they can rustle you up a cheeseboard and a glass of port. Parking is difficult, but Dukes is just a 15-minute walk from the train station.
