The good people of Bath have traded on this site for around 800 years, though the elegant markethall that stands here today dates mainly from the 18th century. Inside this glass-domed, iron-columned atrium is a cluster of stalls selling all manner of delights – from buttons and bows to secondhand books, fancy-dress costumes and pet supplies. There's an olde-worlde sweet shop and a greengrocers selling local veg. There's also a mouth-watering deli (spicy pea cakes recommended) and a 1950s-style diner – the perfect place to take a break with a milkshake on one of its leather-topped stools.
