A place of worship for over a thousand years, Bath Abbey’s light-filled interior is most notable for its mesmeric fan-vaulted ceiling and a bounty of memorials – some 4,000 people lie beneath its stone flooring. It’s worth paying for the Tower Tour (212 steps) for views into the nearby Roman Baths and across the city, as well as down through the ceiling to the pews below.
