While the lakes get top billing in the Lake District, there's a whole other side to this gorgeous corner of northwest England. In small, stone hamlets and hidden valleys, away from the tourist hotspots, are tranquil hideaways where life is based around the rhythms of a traditional farming landscape. Troutbeck in the southern Lakes is one such spot, and Townfoot Barn is the perfect retreat – a secluded bolthole for two in a luxury, contemporary barn conversion that's as private as you want to be while still just a short drive from either Ambleside or Windermere. You want fields full of sheep and country walks, you get them; you want a quick hop to a lakeside view, you've got that too.

The cottage is in a beautiful spot – looking down over the fields and woods of Troutbeck valley – and a couple of sun-trap patio and garden areas make the most of the rural views. Inside, you're looking at a terrific two-floor layout that puts a stunning kitchen-diner on the ground level, while living and sleeping are upstairs. The kitchen is a beauty of porcelain tiled floors and granite worktops, equipped with everything you need from high-spec appliances to Nespresso machine. Upstairs, there's a contemporary, earth-toned living space under wooden beams, and a similarly smart king-sized bedroom with bespoke oak furniture and an en-suite bathroom. Monsoon shower over the bath, you might expect – little bathroom window overlooking your own private waterfall, perhaps not. The bedroom also has a balcony door, so there's direct access down some stone steps to a patio for your al fresco morning cuppa which you can enjoy along with a complimentary breakfast basket which includes bread, cereals and jams.

The cottage is dog-friendly and it's also EV friendly, with fast overnight charging available. To be honest, you might leave the car where it is for a day or two anyway, because Troutbeck has tons of local walks heading off in every direction, from easygoing valley ramble to challenging fell-top hike. You can even get to the nearest lake, Windermere, on foot, over the tops via Wansfell to the tourist town of Ambleside. The elongated village of Troutbeck itself has two great pubs serving food – the nearest, the Mortal Man, is a Lake District classic, with wonderful views from the garden. And if you need more pampering than a pub can provide, you get complimentary access to a local health club where there's a spa, pool, sauna and gym. All in all, Townfoot Barn is a pretty stylish base for a traditional country getaway in one of England's most celebrated holiday areas.
