A wonderful Arts and Crafts house, with beautiful views from the garden café over lake Windermere.

We say

The most beautiful private house in the Lake District? It’s not too much of an accolade for Blackwell, a perfectly restored Arts and Crafts mansion (built 1898–1900) on the shores of Windermere that’s the masterwork of architect Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott. Every detail tells a story, from the intricately carved panelling to the vibrant stained glass, and the best way to appreciate the amazing interior is to arrive in time for one of the daily guided tours. A terrace tea room has views of the lake, and there’s also a super shop selling contemporary designer ceramics and jewellery – you don’t need to pay for entrance to the house to visit either the café or shop.

Victorian Tudor ★★★★☆

This is a great place, which is worth a visit to sit in the café and while away an afternoon - there's a lovely view from the lower terrace of the café over the lake, so head down the steps to the little private terrace after you've seen the house. It is a little way out of Windermere but is worth the trip - the house is fascinating, if a little variable in style - the modern fireplace settings jar a little with the ersatz medieval feel of the rest of the house, but there is some wonderful craftsmanship on display in the details of every room, from the panelling to the murals.
