A rather grand old inn in the historic heart of Winchester, The Westgate has had a bit of a revamp recently and is looking better than ever and seems to relish its role as perhaps the city centre's most appealing inn. It serves good quality, affordably priced food and offers extremely reasonably priced, up-to-date rooms as well. And like any proper pub, it's also a good place for a drink, and has an animated vibe that makes it a perfect place to base yourself while seeing the best Winchester has to offer.

Perhaps the Westgate's greatest strength is its location at the top of the High Street, with everything in the bustling city centre within easy walking distance. But its rooms are also a draw, all decorated in cool, muted colours with a similar, stripped-back style. They've all got king-size cast-iron beds, feature walls, period fireplaces and city views of one sort or another – plus good wifi, flatscreen Freeview TVs, tea- and coffee-making facilities and en-suite bathrooms with toiletries provided. Downstairs, food is served pub-style – order at the bar – and boasts a well-priced run through gastropub classics, with a few fancier seasonal dishes. Sunday lunch is a popular affair, and they have a good range of local beers, artisan gins and the like. There's a walled courtyard too, if the weather lends itself to a spot of al fresco drinking and dining.

There's no on-site parking, but there are car parks nearby and the train station is just five minutes away, so the pub is ideal for an easy city break by public transport – and you really are handy for the sights: the historic High Street, and the Great Hall, one of the only surviving parts of Winchester Castle, are literally a minute away on foot, and Jane Austen's House and the city's amazing Cathedral are just a few minutes' further on foot. And if you do bring that car, then you're well placed for exploring the multiple attractions in the surrounding countryside – the South Downs, New Forest and the rest of southern Hampshire awaits.
