Kingsgate Arch College Street Winchester SO23 9PD 01962 864 710
Squeezed into one of the city’s two remaining medieval gates, this fascinating little shop specialises in quality pen-and-ink drawings and watercolours by local artists, and sells a range of beautifully crafted antique county maps. It also regularly hosts book launches, exhibitions and other events. The stock is regularly changing and if you're searching for something specific then the helpful owner, Mike, will be happy to give advice and dig around. An antique shop in an antique building, a charming little place for some quirky pieces.
I called in to Kingsgate for the first time 5 years ago when I saw a beautiful antique print of Winchester in the window. My house has never been the same since! Over 100 prints later(!), I'm still a regular visitor to the shop to see the latest antique prints and maps in stock. The owner, Mike, is a master craftsman for framing, with a vast choice of beautiful frames and mounts. The medieval Kingsgate shop is marvellously atmospheric and Mike always guarantees a friendly and knowledgeable welcome, whether you're just browsing for a gift or whether you're a serious collector looking for a rare antique map or print. A real Winchester gem!
This modest shop is a real find - just behind Winchester Cathedral on the way to Jane Austen's House and Winchester College. I found interesting small gift ideas, prints not just of Winchester but of towns and cities across the UK. There's also rarer prints that are really special. I met the owner, Mike, and yes, he's a really helpful guy. He was able to frame my selection quickly and professionally. Good value visit.
Kingsgate Books and Prints is a beautifully appointed little shop nestling discreetly under the ancient arch between the Cathedral and College. It is packed with prints depicting every corner of the country as well as maps, engravings, postcards and second-hand books. There is also an excellent bespoke framing service which I recommend from personal experience. The owner, Mike, is charming, knowledgeable and friendly and nothing is too much trouble. So why not spend some timeless moments just browsing and finding that special place, scene or location from an impressive selection. Make a point of visiting this unique little print emporium packed with pleasures.
