Places to stay
Hampshire’s county town has a scholarly feel, which is matched by its range of places to stay, many of which are beautifully located in old Georgian houses. Since Winchester itself is fairly compact, all the accommodation is pretty central and within easy walking distance of the main sights. The flip side to this, of course, is that 'good location' results in slightly pricey rooms and you'll find Winchester is not the cheapest place to stay. There are a some decent hotels and pleasant B&Bs, and the odd boutique hotel; or, if you want to enjoy the history of the town you can stay in the Winchester Royal, which once served as a bishop’s residence.
