Solomon's Island

This place has been a closely guarded secret for decades. It is the ideal retreat for thinking and writing, It's wonderful when you bring the family and some friends and enjoy the most atmospheric and romantic end of the British Isles (including the best waves in the bluest sea). If there were more weeks in the year, this is where I would be. Don't hesitate.

Solomon's Island is a perfect place to forget all and relax completly, The views are spectacular and beautiful walks are directly at your doorstep. I have visited and stayed at Solomon's Island many times over the past, I think nearly 30 years, and just thinking about it gives me a certain piece of mind. Solomon's Island for sure is the de-stress place to be !!

Returning home again having spent a week at the cottage which has become for our family the place to relax: away from the stresses of work and routine: reminiscing. Solomon's Island is where we slow down, ignore clocks, enjoy breakfast on the back bench whilst watching swallows flying in and out of the barn windows; gaze at the sun setting over the sea from the front porch, timeless qualities; sharing a smile with my husband as we watch our grown up children and partners focusing on a chess championship ( no new technology evident), much needed and valued time together. I endorse all of the previous reviews Solomon's Island is a fantastic place to stay, I look forward to returning........

Soloman's island is one of the most beautiful places I've stayed. Rugged & peaceful with fantastic views, it is at once isolated and yet within easy reach of amenities. I've stayed there a couple of times now and was reluctant to leave. I spent late evenings watching the sun dip below the horizon & gazing at the stars.This place is what magic is made of.

We've been visiting Solomon's Island for several years now. And what a brilliant, blissful place it is. Our family of four highly recommend it. Here's why: 1. It is massively isolated. At the end of a gravel track (watch out low-slung cars). There's a small front and rear garden for kids to play in, but also a big common including ruined hill fort, quiot and more a five minute stroll up the hill. Down the hill the dairy farmer is lovely (our kids got to meet calves last time). It's quiet, peaceful and the sunsets are well worth pulling the deckchairs out for. And yes, isolation also means no TV or phone signal. And it can get windy up there in foul weather. 2. It's cosy - a wood-burning fire and constantly warm Rayburn downstairs are perfectly complimented by a massive selection of books and boardgames. Three bedrooms - one twin/double, one double and three singles in the huge children's room are rustic, lovely (and the last is a bit drafty in very strong winds - but nothing big duvets don't take care of). 3. Nearby there's loads to do. Bring bodyboards or surfboards, you're half an hour's drive from surfing beaches with rockpools and sandcastles. But there's also Portheras Cove - 10 minute drive/30 minute walk to the cliffs, then 20 minute walk and scramble down to the beach. No amenities at all - but that also means very often no one else on the sand, or the rocks to clamber over. There's also wilder bits of Cornwall inland - for hilly walking, running and road cycling from the front door. And good restaurants, pubs and food shops nearby. 4. The people who run Solomon's Island don't lock everything away in one room. As a result, the rooms feel human, happy (and if you've forgotten a bodyboard, chances are you may find one here). 5. It's environmentally friendly - water from a borehole, solar panels on the roof.

What a lovely location beautiful countryside with lovely walks. Fantastic beaches and absolutely stunning sunsets which you can view from the large front porch. Brilliant place to see shooting stars and just get away from it all. We really enjoyed our stay at the cottage you have everything you need (without all the technology 😃) we had lots of great beach days and walks. The kids loved it too we all enjoyed playing games, cooking, chatting together in the evening with a lovely fire burning. A brilliant place to go to get away from it all.

We loved Solomon’s Island and have just returned from our fourth visit. A great, get-away-from-it-all cottage offering privacy and rural tranquility. An archetypical cornish cottage set in a rugged landscape with sea views of the Atlantic. Unique and unforgettable.

Solomon's Island has a magnificent view and every summer evening after putting the children down I sit in the front garden and enjoy the sunset over the coast. Despite the isolated location, it's literally a magical place for children. Their three-bedded kids' bedroom is packed with boardgames and full of character. If you have older children, you can let them open their own garden door, which leads down a set of stone steps into the garden (they play, you lie in - bliss!) Our have been doing this since age five. The gardens are full of bunnies. A very short walk takes you to Chun Quoit and Chun Castle, while longer walks take you to a whole host of standing stones. And down the lane, which has no traffic, is the neighbouring dairy farm. You can walk down there with a bottle and serve yourself to fresh, unhomogenised milk from the machine - there's an honesty box to pay. Finally the local shop Pendeen Stores is surprisingly well stocked, including fresh bread and a good range of fresh bread. And the beach nearby is stunning - a good walk to get down to it, but as a result the whole sandy cove is deserted compared with more accessible beaches. If you want to step straight from car to beach, cafes and ice creams then make for Sennen Cove, but it can get busy!

As others have said this is the perfect spot to get away from the stresses and strains of day to day living. The cottage brings an appreciation of the simple things in life because that which modernity complicates through too much choice, become accessible again. With no TV or telephone to distract and no imposed timetable to follow, deeply satisfying, old fashioned habits return – the rituals of mealtimes, conversation, making your own entertainment etc. regain their significance and acquire a new positive energy. Things are communal, rather than individual, you can’t help but connect with the people you are staying with. Leave the cottage during the day and these themes continue – its remoteness gently encourages you to engage with the environment; your senses, often tuned out to avoid the noise of urban living, begin to tune back in. The land around the house caters to all ages and imaginations; a gentle stroll, an invigorating scramble, an adventure with your kids, or even just a moment of reflection as you draw in both the view and the fresh air. It’s not all about isolation though; a short drive allows you to add Cornwall’s normal treats to your stay – unspoilt beaches, coastal walks, country pubs and more. If you’re looking for something different and far more rewarding than a stay in a hotel or even a stay in a typical holiday rental then Solomon’s Island is a great choice.

We have been to Solomons Island several times over the last few years when we have needed to recharge. In the midst of a nature reserve with dreamy views of the Cornish coast from all rooms and enormous sunsets, you can feel your normal daily tensions slipping away as soon as you walk into the cottage. When our teenage children are with us they drift into family board games on the very first evening and I can get through a book every other day! If they do start to twitch and they have explored the immediate locality there is the whole of western Cornwall within an hours drive. We have been to Solomons Island in all seasons. The local fauna and flora are beautiful in the summer but the extreme snugness during a winter storm with wind howling around the cottage is also fabulous and shouldn't be missed! We look forward to visiting Solomons Island for years to come. We have so many great memories of our stays at Solomons Island, I cant praise it enough as a family retreat.

The spectacular view from the porch as the sun sets into the sea over Morvah makes our annual 600 mile return trip worth it every time. Our family with 5 children has visited at different times from March to October and enjoyed every season.The cottage is spacious and comfy with quirky traditional features for added charm. The toy chest has a range of games to entertain when the weather is too bracing for the beach. Young children will love walking along sheltered paths up to the Quoit and looking for cows and rabbits. Older children can explore the moor and the iron age hill fort, Chun Castle. Teenagers, once detached from their electronic devices, will revel in the isolation and the freedom to roam. I love the hedgerow flowers in May, the bird song and the absolute silence when the wind stops, the rugged landscape all around, the wealth of ancient monuments, the beautiful sheltered valleys on the south of the peninsular and the fabulous rugged cliff top walks towards Zennor. Solomon's Island is a perfect de-stress location to reconnect with nature and get away from it all with family or friends.

This is a fantastic countryside retreat and has made many happy memories. Set in beautiful surroundings, it's a great way to escape the city. It has great access to nearby beaches often involving a little scenic walk. Views are incredible here, and so are the sunsets. There is no better way to spend a cool summer's evening than watching the sun dip into the sea. Inside is spacious with great bedrooms and a cosy living space. It's really special to ditch the technology and spend some quality time with your friends or family. It has my full recommendation without a shadow of a doubt
