Situated between the more popular tourist hubs of St Ives and Lands End, St Just is worth seeking out not only for the dramatic scenery of Cape Cornwall, but for the homely café-cum-bookshop that is The Cook Book. Walk into the smell of freshly ground coffee, books lining stone walls, home-baked cakes and a stack of daily papers, and you might well be entering a friend's living room. But few friends will whip up such a divine chocolate and beetroot cake or serve the same calibre of hearty fare crammed with local ingredients. From paninis and pies to the more unusual Cheese Teas (savoury scones, Cornish cheeses and red onion marmalade) the food here is worth working up an appetite for; it's up to you whether you decide to do this striding to Cape Cornwall and back or simply browsing the array of titles in the second hand bookshop upstairs.
