A cosy, deliberately traditional boutique hotel where nothing is too much trouble.
Cromer Rd North Walsham NR28 0HD 01692 403 231
We sayBelieve it or not, the small town of North Walsham on the northern edge of the Broads, was a big noise in the Middle-Ages for its weaving industry. Nowadays it’s pleasant enough, but there’s not a lot to bring you here apart from the Beechwood Hotel, which has long been one of our favourite Norfolk places to stay – a boutique bolt-hole in the centre of the town that makes a perfect base for the northern Norfolk Broads and nearby Norfolk coast. It’s pretty traditional in style, with seventeen beautifully furnished rooms that hark back to the days of Agatha Christie (who was a regular guest here when it was a private house), and four additional, more contemporary double rooms in Bay Tree House next door, which was added a couple of years ago and furnished to a very high standard. All the rooms – in both houses – have free wifi, IPod docking stations, flatscreen TVs, and spacious bathrooms, a couple with freestanding baths. The main house is full of Christie memorabilia, and there’s an easy-going, old-fashioned charm to the place that’s infectious. There’s a cosy, deliberately traditional bar and a lovely small garden out the back, plus a really excellent restaurant, whose chef has been here for two decades and who cooks high-quality food on a menu that changes daily and is all based on locally-sourced produce – they're famous for their 'ten-mile dinner' (the furthest away chef likes to get his ingredients). They also serve lunch and afternoon tea. All in all the Beechwood is great for seeing an area stacked with things to see and do, whether it's the nearby coast or the Broads, immediately to the south. The problem is Hugh, Emma and their team will have made you feel so welcome you may not want to leave.

The Beechwood is on the northwestern side of North Walsham's tiny centre. Approaching from the south on the main A149, make a right at the second set of traffic lights onto Cromer Road and the hotel is on the left. From North Walsham train station, walk down to the main A149, cross over into the town centre and follow King Arms St and then Market St to where it meets Cromer Road and turn left; the hotel is on the right – a 5–10-minute walk.
Open all year.
