Rose & Crown
UK England East Anglia Norfolk

- 16 Guest Rooms
- Cosy Country Inn
Run by the people behind the excellent Bank House in King's Lynn, this ancient inn has been around since the 14th century and in some ways is still a traditional village boozer. But it's also increasingly well-known as a place to stay, and we reckon it is everything a pub with rooms should be – a delightfully modernised old inn with sixteen pretty and very comfortable en-suite guest rooms and a cracking bar downstairs.
The inn does what inns do – hidden corners, low ceilings and beams – but the rooms are all bright and Norfolk seasidey, and come with good quality beds and linen, free wifi, TV, fluffy towels for everyone and Molton Brown toiletries. Children and dogs? No problem – pooches pay a modest extra charge, and it's just £20 a night for kids under 12 to share their parents' room, and 2 rooms have wheelchair access, too. The walled garden is a sunny spot for drinkers, while the restaurant is first-rate, with proper attention given to local, seasonal ingredients and fast and efficient service – oysters and mussels, burgers and steaks, and a good old Sunday lunch that draws punters in from miles around (you'll want to book for this).
The other nice thing about the Rose & Crown is that it's so handy for some of the most alluring stretches of the North Norfolk Coast – the nearby Snettisham RSPB reserve, the Queen's summer retreat at Sandringham and the pretty villages nearby – Docking, Bircham, Ingoldisthorpe – all of which are lovely links in a perfect country walk or cycle ride.
