A seaside hostel that enjoys a unique location high above the booming Atlantic surf of north Cornwall.
Tintagel Cornwall PL34 0DW 0845 371 9145
Perched on the top of a cliff on the dramatic north Cornwall coast, this is the YHA at its most elemental – a traditional hostel in a vintage cottage with the most extraordinary views.
It's not quite back to basics, but there is a real yesteryear feel about the place, from bunk beds in all the rooms to self-catering only, with the nearest pubs and shops a mile away. That said, it's been recently refurbished and is extremely cosy and comfortable, with facilities that include new toilets and showers, a dining area and lounge, a fully equipped and rather stunning kitchen, plus drying room and cycle store. In the lounge, people tend to gather around the wood-burner in the evening while they gaze out at those views of the awesome north Cornish coast.
There are 20 beds in the main building and a small annexe that sleeps two people – though you have to come across to the main building from the annexe for the bathroom. You can book the whole place to yourself at certain times of the year, and it would definitely make a great budget house-party venue for a wild coastal gathering.
There's not much to the village of Tintagel itself, but you're just a mile from the ruins of King Arthur's Tintagel Castle – one of the most dramatic ruins in the whole of the country – and there is also Trebarwith Strand just beyond that, which is great for walking, rock-pooling and crab-hunting.

By car: from Tintagel village take the B3263 to Tregatta (3/4 mile). Turn right along a narrow lane, then follow a very rough unlit track to the hostel. On foot: follow the road to Tintagel church, then follow a path 300 yards to hostel.
