Among the historic streets that lead through Arundel to its thousand-year-old castle, you’ll find The Bakery, a two-bedroomed holiday cottage that’s as characterful as it is comfortable in a location that’s hard to beat if you’re here to explore the town. You only need to step out the front door and the castle walls are within sight. Meanwhile, Arundel Cathedral is a couple of minutes’ walk and the high street is even closer. This is a great place to stay for a weekend where you don’t have to get in the car, and if you fancy staying longer, there’s plenty more to do further afield. The South Downs National Park stretches north of the town and the south coast at Littlehampton is just a few miles away.

From the outside, this Grade II-listed cottage looks quaintly proportioned – but behind the whitewashed façade is more than you might expect: a pair of king-size bedrooms and two bathrooms, with a sofa bed too. That means up to six can stay and it’s as good for two couples or a small group of grown-up friends as it is for families. The ground floor offers the living space, which includes that sofa bed. Here, plush turquoise sofas, warm lighting, contemporary art and a Smart TV make it feel more modern than you might expect. But there are reminders of its history too: Georgian windows, exposed timbers and painted brickwork walls.

There’s more of this mix as you head down a narrow staircase to the lower ground floor where the kitchen is tucked away, and you can also access a small courtyard garden. Here you’ll find contemporary kitchen cupboards and appliances alongside exposed brick walls and the old bakery oven – a fascinating reminder of the building’s former use.

Upstairs, the balance tips the other way. You can’t escape the character of the cottage (and nor would you want to), but contemporary comforts line and fill these rooms by way of king-size beds, soft carpets and deluxe flourishes in gold and silver. Together with the elegantly finished bathrooms, this floor has the feel of a cosy boutique hotel, right down to the quality toiletries in the bathrooms. All in all, it’s simply a lovely place to relax before and after days out exploring the historic town that surrounds you and the countryside beyond.
