41 West Nicolson Street Edinburgh EH8 9DB 0131 667 7010
In a city with the highest hotel occupancy rates in Europe after Paris, dining out, if you want to eat very well, can be expensive. Newcomer restaurant Field fills a definite gap, with a staggeringly good value three-course dinner menu at £14.50 and well-chosen wines from £16 a bottle. The dining room is wonderfully small scale and cosy, like a posh dinner party with your most tasteful friends, and the menu showcases fresh local ingredients cooked really well. There is real finesse to the cooking, despite the keen prices, with yummy dishes like beetroot cured salmon with a raisin and caper compote, saffron crème fraiche and a crisy crab ball. Hearty and unusual mains include a chorizo burger, and spicy Spanish sausages also sneak into the slow cooked pork belly, along with a cabbage potato ball, grilled pak choi and ponzu sauce. Proper food. Crazy prices.
