A contemporary hotel that doesn't stand on ceremony and is brilliantly placed for the best of Lakeland's Great Outdoors.
Situated on the shores of England's second largest lake (Ullswater), in its own 18 acres of the Lake District National Park, Another Place, The Lake is the kind of hotel that was once a rarity in the Lakes – perfectly placed for holidays that make the most of the Great Outdoors, yet with a sumptuousness and contemporary elegance that make it a pleasure to go back to at the end of each day. The hotel has ultra-comfy rooms with a bit of style, along with great facilities and – perhaps most importantly – great food and service. Its 40 rooms mix original and historic features with crisp, contemporary decor and include a number of family suites and dog-friendly options. There is a heated indoor pool, a sauna and hot tub and all sorts of spa treatments are on offer, while out in the grounds and the countryside around you can go open-water swimming, sailing, paddle-boarding on the lake, as well as cycling and walking on the fells around Ullswater.
From the team behind the renowned Watergate Bay Hotel at the other end of the country in Cornwall, the hotel is due to open in August, 2017. It places an emphasis on providing a relaxed and active vibe that's perfectly in tune with its surroundings – a hipsterish sort of joint in the best possible sense of the word, with no pretensions yet with a natural sense of occasion that makes you want to return. Food is a key part of its proposition, deliberately making the most of local produce with ingredients sourced from the hotel's own vegetable patch and herb garden and then served up all day in the low-key bar or more formal restaurant. Before dinner, you can enjoy drinks on the terrace, and there are convivial public spaces throughout – busy and welcoming and very much connected to the gardens and lakeland scenery outside. It's a beautiful place for a wedding or private function, and quite the best place for families and couples to explore Ullswater and this part of the northern Lakes.
