A contemporary country-house hotel that is brilliantly placed for the best of the Lake District.
Watermillock Ullswater Cumbria CA11 0LP 01768 486 442
Situated on the shores of England's second largest lake (Ullswater), in its own 18 acres of the Lake District National Park, Another Place, The Lake is perfectly poised for holidays that make the most of the great outdoors. A country house hotel makeover has given the place a real lift, adding a contemporary elegance that make it a pleasure to go back to at the end of each day.
The hotel has ultra-comfy rooms with a bit of style, along with great facilities and – perhaps most importantly – great food and service. There's a great use of local produce, with ingredients sourced from the
hotel's own vegetable patch and herb garden and then served up
in the low-key bar or more formal restaurant. Before dinner, you can
enjoy drinks on the terrace, and there are convivial public spaces
throughout – all very much connected to the lakeside gardens
and grandstand scenery outside.
The 40 rooms mix original and historic features with crisp, contemporary decor and include a number of family suites and dog-friendly options. There is a heated indoor pool, a sauna and hot tub and all sorts of spa treatments, while out in the grounds and the countryside around you can go open-water swimming, sailing, paddle-boarding on the lake, as well as cycling and walking on the fells around Ullswater.
It's a beautiful place for a wedding or private party, and quite the fanciest place for families and couples to explore Ullswater and this part of the northern Lakes.
The hotel is brought to you from the team behind the renowned Watergate Bay Hotel at the other end of the country in Cornwall, and opened its doors in August, 2017. It places an emphasis on providing a relaxed and active vibe that's perfectly in tune with its surroundings – a hipsterish sort of joint in the best possible sense of the word, with no pretensions yet with a natural sense of occasion that makes you want to return.
