Plas Mynach offers a rather grand place for self-catering stays on the coastal edge of Snowdonia National Park. With stepped gables, a tower and views overlooking Barmouth and Cardigan Bay, this pair of holiday homes offer the look and feel of staying in a clifftop castle. The main house sleeps up to eight while the self-contained Tower Flat makes this castle-style accommodation available for a couple on their own. Whichever you choose, the outlooks from the window are spectacular and the location between the mountains and the sea is hard to beat.

Both are part of the same Grade II-listed country house. A separate private entrance and spiral staircase lead to the Tower Flat, and accommodation that’s modern, light and airy with spectacular sea vistas. There’s a double bedroom, a lounge and a modern bathroom and kitchen. It also has a private sun deck on the roof boasting panoramic sea and mountain views and is an ideal space for two, whether you’rbee here on your own or as part of a larger group.

The Tower Flat can also be hired together with the larger accommodation next door, where, in the main house, everything is on a grander scale. There are six bedrooms and three bathrooms, but it’s downstairs that gives the wow factor. Dark wood, red upholstery and antique furniture decorate the communal spaces and make it feel even older than its 140 years. There’s a panelled hall and two joined reception rooms with an open fire at one end and a dining table at the other. And there’s more room for communal meals in the kitchen, which has its own scullery and a four-oven range cooker to cater for your group. Outside, you'll find a lawned garden with furniture and a barbecue, too.

Whether you book the Tower Flat as a bolthole for two, Plas Mynach for your family or the whole place for a group get-together, there’s ample space and plenty of private rooms. It’s the kind of place you may just stay put – reading, playing games and catching up with whoever you’ve come with. But to ignore what’s on the doorstep is rather hard, because it’s in your view all the time. Set among the oak woods, there's a distinctly secluded feel to the grounds, even though the expansive lawn faces the sea, and you're but a short walk to town and the beach. The house sits on the edge of Barmouth, which offers a sandy beach, fishing boats and exceptional sunsets, and behind is Eryri or Snowdonia National Park. Seaside, mountains and castles – what more could you want from Wales?
