This pair of beautifully restored self-catering cottages sit just south of the Peak District National Park, amid stunning countryside. Their location on a 17th-century farm in Winkhill, Staffordshire makes them easily the closest accommodation to the Peak Wildlife Park, and they're also only a few miles from Alton Towers and Dovedale. Each cottage is perfectly sized for a couple: one has a generous bathroom with an enormous walk-in shower and roll-top bath, the other a wood-fired hot tub and private patio. All this makes choosing to come here easy. Deciding which cottage to stay in, however, is a lot harder.

The two properties are pretty, stone-walled, one-bedroomed cottages that are both contemporary and finished to a high standard. They're kept immaculately clean, homely and warm. There’s carpet underfoot, a country-cottage-style kitchen and quality furniture that fits in with the exposed beams and stonework. But other things set each of the Peak Boutique Cottages apart.

Brook Cottage boasts the roll-top bath and walk-in shower. There's a real sense of flow through the house – the kitchen-dining room is connected through a wide doorway to the living room which features a wood-burning stove in a statement fireplace and a sofa bed, meaning this cottage can sleep up to four. The brickwork chimney stretches up two floors to the mezzanine bedroom, right off which you find that spacious bathroom.

Next door, Nook Cottage is just as lovely – an ideal cottage for couples and a real romantic retreat. The door out the back leads to a private patio with a wood-fired hot tub and outdoor seating, all with far-reaching countryside views. It's perfect for those dining al fresco evenings, or watching the stars from the hot tub.

Dog owners will love these dog-friendly cottages, with plenty of walking options right from the cottage door, not to mention the nearby Peak District National Park and Staffordshire Peaks. Your thoughtful hosts also provide outdoor dog wash facilities at each cottage for when you return.

When not relaxing in these cosy cottages, you're perfectly placed to explore the many nearby natural wonders such as Thors Cave in the Manifold Valley or Dimmingsdale and Dovedale with their enchanting waterfalls, streams and stepping stones. Meanwhile, Alton Towers is a mere 10 minutes away. If you'd like something a little more sedate, the charming towns of Bakewell and Matlock Baths boast some lovely shops, or you can immerse yourself in the grandeur of Chatsworth House with its sprawling estate and gardens. Whichever cottage you choose, it's all within a 20-mile radius.

Beautiful house in a beautiful location

Check-in and check-out were very easy. Property was very clean and tidy and the location was beautiful. The hot tub was amazing, even if it was thunder and lightning. We will hopefully catch a clear night next time and do some star gazing. Will hopefully return again in the future.

Brook Cottage is beautiful!

Brook Cottage has been renovated to a high standard and it’s extremely comfortable. Despite being dog friendly (we brought our Weimaraner), it is pristine and clean. There is a hose outside to clean off muddy dogs and shoes (we needed this having got extremely muddy on every walk!) and a washing machine to clean muddy clothes! There is a log burner to warm toes and a luxurious bathroom with a claw foot bath and the biggest shower we have ever seen, complete with underfloor heating. Beautiful lighting all around the cottage has been well thought out and plenty of sockets. Great kitchen and the comfiest of beds. We ate in the cottage on our first night but enjoyed the recommended Lazy Trout, Fox and Goose and Denstone Hall cafe. Victoria is a great host and we managed to stay an extra night as our plans changed. We walked at Dove Dale and Dimming Dale. Highly recommend a stay, great for dogs, walking and relaxing when you get back!

Brook Cottage was beautiful

The photos of the place do not do justice to how lovely the cottage really is. Added bonus was the beautiful bathroom and fireplace, we loved lighting a fire in the evening after a busy day! Lovely peaceful surroundings with plenty of places nearby to explore, a perfect getaway. Victoria was a lovely host and we would definitely recommend her beautiful cottage to family and friends!
