A superb eclectic, romantic and isolated rural retreat, ideal for couples and families wanting to escape it all and reconnect with nature. Mobile reception is very limited here, but it all adds to the remote experience and there is a landline for emergencies.

If you've ever visited this part of Wales before then you'll understand when we say this is quite possibly one of the most idyllic rural stretches of rolling hills, lakes, forest, mountains and valleys that Wales has to offer – all dotted with charming pubs, farm shops and glorious walking trails. There's quite a few country houses and barns to dote enviably on, and Red Kite Barn is no exception. It's the stuff of rural escape-to-the-country fantasies, hidden down a long remote track, overlooking a breathtaking private forest. You almost expect to see a charming little woodcutters cottage but instead you're met by a large contemporary and stylish converted barn with original stone walls and characterful beams, and huge panoramic windows. The barn prides itself as a modern take on rustic inspired by nature but with an urban twist. The rustic is provided by details such as bespoke ironmongery on handcrafted oak doors, cosy bathrooms with tadelackt floors, sheep wool throws and rugs to keep you warm and a bespoke oak staircase. Whereas the urban twist comes in the form of funky LED lighting, a large cinema room with HD projector and a luxurious bath heated by the ground source heat pumps which power the building. There's also a large living area with open fireplace and an outdoor decking area for you to sit and gaze at the stars. It really is an architect's rural masterpiece made even better by all the restored art and furniture. We reckon you'll find it difficult to decide what's most impressive: the barn, or its 80-acre private and unspoilt surrounding – where, incidentally, you'll also find the rather wonderful Red Kite Tree Tent.

The barn is located down a single track in a village called Newbridge on Wye, near Builth Wells and Llanafan-fawr. You will be sent a lovely booklet once you've made your booking, which includes full detailed directions from Newbridge on Wye. Just remember that the single track path does go on for quite a bit, so don't give up – you'll be on the right track! If in doubt, there's a lovely pub called the Red Lion which proudly claims to be the 'oldest pub in Powys' – they'll be able to direct you.
