Running over three nights and two days at the Custard Factory, the annual SuperSonic Festival has been garnering accolades for its championing of the avant-garde for nigh on a decade now. Curated by Birmingham's most cutting-edge promoters Capsule, the festival presents an eclectic programme of music, art and film. The real draw, however, is the audio assault of the bands, many of whom are an exercise in sonic mayhem that pushes boundaries and challenges accepted musical norms. Cacophonous and experimental, it's not just a navel-gazing event, though: with healthy doses of heavy metal, hip-hop and electronica, it's also about having something to dance and/or mosh to. Indeed SuperSonic can lay reasonable claim to being one of the best city festivals the UK has to offer.
