4 & 5 Kingsmead Square, Bath, BA1 2AB 01225 519 074
Opened in March 2012, Society sits plum on Kingsmead Square – a central Bath meeting area not short on cafes already. But Society has a lot to offer: the coffee (two bean choices) is brewed jolly well, cakes look tempting and service is super friendly. Plus, it's rambling: tables sit on the pavement outside for sunny days; there's bar-style seating for those who want to gaze out of the windows; you can sink into leather banquettes or chat around big dining tables; there's even a cubby hole for kids, with blackboard, chalk and playthings, to keep them entertained while you slurp.
I'm so glad I found out about the Society Cafe as we were there only a few weeks after opening and locals weren't able to help us find it but once we did we knew it was fantastic. I visited with my young daughter and while I was thrilled with the quality tea - including a personal timer so I knew when it was brewed - my daughter was in heaven downstairs in the children's area. The owner's daughter had come up with the ideas for the children's area and she's obviously a very smart young lady as I saw contented children reading, colouring, drawing on the blackboard and learning origami. The service is friendly and helpful and they brought my tea to the table each time I visited so we could go straight downstairs to play. The wifi is free and strong and meant I could catch up with messages while knowing my daughter was happy too. I just wish they'd open another branch near me!
